Health Data Exploration (HDE) project, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Do you wear an activity tracker? Are you an early adopter of the Quantified Self movement? Have you joined an online community of patients?

The Health Data Exploration (HDE) project is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and HDE looks at how the medical community may be able to tap into that wealth of personal health data (PHD) to improve individual and population health.

This report looks at the current landscape of early-generation wearable activity trackers and devices that may provide some insight on human behavior, impact on our health, and ways to improve health in populations. The report examines questions related to data quality, data security, data sharing, data ownership, and the rapidly evolving ecosystem of wearable devices that will ultimately contribute to our personal health data (PHD).
